Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa. Greetings to you all. Te Wiki o te Reo Māori or Māori language week takes place between Monday, 21 July and Sunday, 27 July 2014. This special week provides an opportunity to celebrate and learn te reo Māori, helping to secure its future as a living, dynamic, and rich language. The theme for this year is "Te kupu o te wiki, The word of the week". This theme promotes learning te reo Māori throughout the year rather than during just one week.
Thirty years after 'Poi E' hit the charts and got everyone singing along in Te Reo Māori, Stan Walker is having another go.
The singer has teamed up with three others to release a new single, which they launched at the start of Māori Language Week.
'Aotearoa' is sung in Te Reo Māori, but was written for everyone who calls this country home.
Walker hopes to make it a hit, spreading the language as well as the music.
"It's not just for people in New Zealand, but people from New Zealand who have moved all around the world that can connect to this song, to connect them back home. Hopefully it will encourage them to learn a bit more Te Reo."
It was launched live at the start of Māori Language Week by Walker, Maisey Rika, Ria Hall and Troy Kingi.
They also gave their support to a new ad campaign that aims to teach New Zealanders a new Māori word every week for the next 50 weeks. The words relate to sports, food, work, travel and everyday life.
Kiwis are used to seeing Te Reo signs like "haere mai" and this embrace of Māori language makes New Zealand proudly different from every other country in the world. It is hoped 50 more words will become just as commonplace.
